An excellent idea for defense funding

Friday, November 16th, 2007

Three Senators have made an excellent suggestion. Since Democrats refuse to pass appropriations bills to fund the war, use the earmarks and pork to fund it. Congressman Murtha’s district alone could pay for an infantry division for a month or two. Two birds with one stone.

What the Democrats face as president.

Roger Simon isn’t sure Obama wants the nomination. He figures maybe this story gives him second thoughts about the whole thing. I wouldn’t blame him. He is a nice man according to one Corner writer who knew him in law school. He must know he isn’t really prepared. Maybe he thinks the second spot on a Hillary ticket would set him up for the future.

Is the New York Times biased against Indian-Americans ?

Friday, November 16th, 2007

Once again, the Times attacks someone because they were appointed by George W Bush. The person being attacked seems to belong to the wrong racial minority for the Times. First Bobby Jindal become governor of Louisiana, next who knows ? Why an outstanding Indian-American even commanded an M-1 A1 Abrams tank in Falluja. He became a big hero in India, where he was born, and may even have added to the pro-American sentiment there. His blog is worth reading although he ended it in 2005.

David Pryce-Jones

David is always reliable when he comments on Europe. Today, he has things to say about Sarkozy. His essays are always worth reading and I have subscribed to City Journal so as not to miss any.

Sailing

This is what a Cal 40 looks like finishing the Transpac . Unfortunately, this one is not my boat. We had hopes of being able to go this past summer but the boat, which had required three years of restoration, was not quite ready and my son, who is now the expert, was too busy with his law practice. He went with me when he was 16 years old, in 1981, and now he wants to take me, even if as he says, he has to lash me in a bunk for the duration.

Trophy Present

This is the trophy presentation in 1981 when we came very close to winning overall. They no longer award overall trophies anymore as the fleet has been broken up into different classes racing under different handicap rules. That was a great year as we sailed 2400 miles in less than 12 days. I had a different boat that year but it was about the same size as the one I have now and which is pictured below.

conquest

This is our present boat sitting at Catalina Island last Labor Day. It is in full cruising configuration and looks good. It took three years of hard work to get it there.

Sarkozy’s Thatcher Moment

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

I have been telling friends for two years that France is starting to figure out their mistakes and change. I have been visiting France for 30 years and I have never seen the people so friendly to Americans. Almost everyone speaks English now, and even the girl in the RER station, who did not speak English, had a card with the instructions on how to obtain a discount at Versailles printed in English. Naturally, this will require reforms and the battle has begun to see if Sarkozy can stand against the trade unions which are opposed to reform and have defeated every effort since De Gaulle. I wish him well.

Victor Davis Hanson

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

Victor Davis Hanson, a man I admire as a scholar, has a post today about the Iraq War and the position of the Democratic Party right now. He has been under attack by a LTC Batemen, who writes on Eric Alterman’s column on Media Matters , a left wing political site. Bateman seems to be upset that Hanson, a classicist and historian, writes on military matters. I guess no one else can write about that although LTC Bateman’s politcal allies, like Harry Reid, certainly seem to feel free to declare the war lost.

A New Blog

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

I have been content to comment on other blogs until now. The subjects I am interested in are politics, sailing and medical history. I am somewhere between a conservative and a libertarian politically. My sailing history goes back to college, nearly 50 years ago. Medical history is a more recent interest but I was reading original articles as a basis for study even in medical school, 40 years ago.
