The Greeks forecast the future

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Victor Davis Hansen writes excellent essays on many topics but he outdid himself today on the Greek crisis in the EU.

Greece is the canary in the mine of the impending crack-up of the modern welfare state. It is a great gift to us all, this example. A year ago, the socialists, even as they were juggling and falsifying their books, were bragging that the Wall Street meltdown was a referendum — and capitalism was doomed. Now, the entire socialist dream is exposed and even the most ardent statist knows that there is no longer enough “others” to pay the tab.

The poor EU learned that the Greek siesta, the 10PM Athenian dinners, the state power company vans at the beaches in the workday afternoons, the kafenions full of 50-year-old men at 11AM, the angry students perpetually in the streets at each hinted reform, and the moonlighting telephone employees all came at the expense of far harder-working Scandinavian and German socialists, who apparently now realize a nice two weeks each year on Santorini or Crete aren’t worth billions of their own Euros in rescue bailouts.

The Greeks are the most extreme example. I wondered about their society as I watched the unfinished Olympic stadium two months before the Summer Games began in 2004. They scrambled and got it finished but I wondered about the cost at the time. Greece is a lovely theme park for tourists but, as a modern country, it has always been a bit ridiculous. The extreme socialists, like Andreas Papandreou, took Greece far left after a right wing dictatorship was displaced. His son, George, now presides over the inevitable collapse of the Socialist state his father constructed. He was also president of the Socialist International. Of course, he has a Harvard degree and was born in Minnesota, both excellent Socialist credentials.

Here in California we see the symptoms of the same Greek malady as we go from one budget shortfall to the next — dream-like borrowing, raising taxes, and furloughing, in lieu of the tough medicine of cutting government payrolls, changing pension payouts, and freezing the pay of state-workers until their compensation mirror images those in the private sector.

Postmodern Western society will soon witness a real showdown, analogous to the teenager who rebels and either accepts that he is still dependent on his parents and therefore subject to the rules of the house, or runs away and implodes in a sea of drugs and street-life.

In short, how will an entitled society react when the money runs out and it learns that it must change or wither away — and all the whining rhetoric about “social justice” and “a green future” and “spread the wealth” and “redistributive change” won’t bring another barrel of oil or bushel of wheat or Douglas fir 2” x 4”?

I should interject here that another of my daughter’s partying friends died yesterday of a presumed overdose. Fortunately, she is sober in all respects, a blessing for a parent.

California is probably doomed. It was a beautiful place when I moved here for college in 1956. Pat Brown was the last Democrat governor who had a positive effect on the state. His son, Jerry, began the decline with his election in 1975 as Governor. Now, ironically, he is the Democrat candidate this year and will probably be elected again as I don’t think the California voters are aware of how close the collapse is. The conservative voters have been leaving the state for ten years, being replaced by illegal aliens and their children, who are reliable Democrat votes. There was a warning in 1991 when Pete Wilson, a Republican, raised taxes in a recession and the state was the last to emerge from the slowdown. He was also the last Republican governor (I don’t count Schwartzenegger). One reason why he was the last was Prop 187, a ballot initiative that would have stopped many services for illegal aliens and required police to check immigration status of arrestees. It passed with 60% of the vote, even a plurality in Hispanic areas, but was invalidated by the state Supreme Court.

Bottom line: I don’t see how the state or federal government can up taxes much more and still find wealth-producing, law-abiding, motivated job creators.

On the other hand, as the money runs out, will state workers, pensioners, and entitlement recipients accept that there are too few wealth-creators to fund their pay-outs, or, as in Greece, hit the streets in protest, teenager style, each time some adjustments are necessary?

So if we can’t raise taxes and we can’t cut expenditures what is left? There is no Germany to bail us out? Cut defense? Keep borrowing from the Chinese and Japanese?

The Chinese are already dumping some of our debt, to the Japanese this week.

Where did all the wealth go? Modern Western society is in some sense becoming drone-like, its entitled sensitive citizens assuming ceremonial roles and attitudes about the very landscape they inherited from their industrious predecessors.

Here in California we idle farmland, though we have the water, expertise, and soil to produce far more food than we do. We put vast swaths of both land and sea off limits to gas and oil production, though we could produce far more petroleum and natural gas than we do. We snub nuclear power, though our population steadily increases and its desire for electronic appurtenance grows, not shrinks. We like “wilderness areas” (who doesn’t?) where we build no roads, harvest no timber, and build no damns. We strangle Silicon Valley with all sorts of labor and business regulations until it fabricates and outsources abroad. In other words, we are creating no real new sources of concrete wealth as we nuance the shrinking capital we inherited.

California is becoming a theme park like Greece. It produces nothing and tourists cannot afford to pay for the state’s budget. The lotus eaters, as California was once called, are awakening.

Suddenly in our media and politics the people are stupid, full of ingratitude, often racist, the system broken, the Congress bankrupt, all of us undeserving of our one chance in a lifetime state agenda. Yes, the petulant liberal attitude in 12 months went from “We, the People” to “You stupid idiots” — and all because some Democratic congresspeople discovered that the more they went out on the limb on Obama stimulus, health care, cap and trade, higher taxes, bigger government, bailouts and endless deficits, the more they were going to get sawed off in November by the ungrateful people. So naturally instead blame the filibuster, the people, the clingers — anything other than the self-preservation instincts of the political class of your own party.

We will see what happens this fall. It may be our last chance to avoid default. People do survive bankruptcy, even national bankruptcy. Argentina had largest gold reserves in the world in 1939. It was a rich country. That may be our future. The productive class emigrates or hides its money in Switzerland, the hoi polloi riot in the streets. We will see.

They are all liars

One of the responses to the CRU scandal is that NASA has all the data and they agree with the global warming hysterics so the East Anglia scandal is no big deal. Well, the Competitive Enterprise Institute has had a Freedom of Information Act request for NASA data in place for two years. Finally, after two years of stonewalling, the CEI notified NASA that they would file suit soon. Probably because of the CRU “Climategate” scandal, the NSAS people finally released the data requested. And is it interesting !

The documents released via the FOIA request, however, contain admissions of data unreliability that are staggering, particularly in light of NASA’s claims to know temperatures and anomalies within hundredths of a degree, and the alarm they helped raise over a mere one degree of claimed warming over more than an entire century.

Dr. Reto Ruedy, a Hansen colleague at GISS, complains in his August 3, 2007, email to his co-worker at GISS and RealClimate blogger Gavin Schmidt:

[The United States Historical Climate Network] data are not routinely kept up-to-date (at this point the (sic) seem to end in 2002).

This lapse led to wild differences in data claimed to be from the same ground stations by USHCN and the Global Climate Network (GHCN). NASA later trumpeted the “adjustments” they made to this data (upward only, of course) in extremely minor amounts — adjustments they are now seen admitting are well within any uncertainty, a fact that received significantly less emphasis in their public media campaign claiming anomalous, man-made warming.

GISS’s Ruedy then wrote:

[NASA’s] assumption that the adjustments made the older data consistent with future data … may not have been correct. … Indeed, in 490 of the 1057 stations the USHCN data were up to 1C colder than the corresponding GHCN data, in 77 stations the data were the same, and in the remaining 490 stations the USHCN data were warmer than the GHCN data.

Ruedy claimed this introduced an estimated warming into the record of 0.1 deg C. Ruedy then described an alternate way of manipulating the temperature data, “a more careful method” they might consider using, instead.

Read the whole thing. Maybe thee people should be prosecuted. Billions of taxpayer dollars have been spent on this nonsense. The next Congress might be interested. This one certainly isn’t.

I especially like this e-mail quote:

Although in public he often used his high-profile perch for global warming cheerleading, former New York Times environmental reporter Andrew Revkin privately wrote that he was worried about the integrity of the ground stations. When still at the Times he wrote to Hansen on August 23, 2007:

i never, till today, visited http://www.surfacestations.org and found it quite amazing. if our stations are that shoddy, what’s it like in Mongolia?

Of course, that is the point and always has been.

UPDATE: Here is more evidence of the coverup, this time by Nature. They are all crooks.

The James O’Keefe story

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

Patterico has the basic story on James O’Keefe’s arrest in Senator Mary Landrieu’s office yesterday. The newspaper theme has been that they were trying to wire tap her phones but this is nonsense. The FBI affidavit (pdf) contains the key to what was going on. Basel (one of the four arrested) asked for the phone that is the main public line to the office. He and Flanagan (another arrestee) both tried to call this telephone, which was not in use at the time, and were unable to get through. They used their cell phones and got (presumably) busy signals even though the phone was not in use at the time. Why is this significant?

Another story about a protest provides the background.

“We were stunned to learn that so many phone calls to Sen. Landrieu have been unanswered and met with continuous busy signals,” Perkins said. “We asked them to call their senators. They could get through to Sen. Vitter, but not Sen. Landrieu.”

“Our lines have been jammed for weeks, and I apologize,” Landrieu said in interview after giving a speech on the Senate floor Tuesday. “But no amount of jamming is going to keep me from supporting a good work for Louisiana and the nation.”

Dwight Hudson of Central said many of his fellow Baton Rouge Tea Party members had phoned Landrieu’s office unsuccessfully for weeks. “The point is they’re not getting their opinion heard. Maybe that’s why they’re out here today,” he said.

I think what they were doing was trying to prove that the telephone lines to Senator Landrieu’s office had been disabled by her staff so that constituents could not reach the office. They asked to see the telephone closet to check if there had been alterations made to the incoming lines so the caller got a busy signal.

This was a dangerous and foolish stunt. This was a federal building and a Senator’s office. O’Keefe, especially, should have kept far away from anything like this. It will be used by the left to discredit his expose’ of ACORN and that is already underway with great glee.

Anyway, that’s what I think at this stage of the story.

DISCLAIMER: This post represents my opinion, and not necessarily that of my employer, the North County Times.

The CRU files were leaked, not “hacked.”

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Here is a very solid explanation of why the files were leaked by an insider at CRU.

The released emails are a gold mine for a system administrator or network administrator to map. While none of the emails released contained headers, several included replies that contained the headers of the original emails. An experienced administrator can create an accurate map of the email topography to and from the CRU over the time period in question, 1998 thru 2009.

The entire post is a detailed explanation which is easy for a unix user to understand.

POP deletes email on the server usually after it is downloaded. Modern POP clients do have an option to save the email on the server for some number of days, but Eudora Light 3.0.3 did not. We can say that Professor Davies’ emails were definitely removed from the server as soon as “Send/Recv” was finished.

This revelation leaves only two scenarios for the hacker:

Professor Davies’ email was archived on a server and the hacker was able to crack into it, or
Professor Davies kept all of his email from 1999 and he kept his computer when he was promoted to Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Transfer in 2004 from his position as Dean of the School of Environmental Sciences.
The latter scenario requires that the hacker would have had to know how to break into Prof. Davies’ computer and would have had to get into that computer to retrieve those early emails. If that were true, then the hacker would have had to get into every other uea.ac.uk computer involved to retrieve the emails on those systems. Given that many mail clients use a binary format for email storage and given the number of machines the hacker would have to break into to collect all of the emails, I find this scenario very improbable.

Which means that the mail servers at uea.ac.uk were configured to collect all incoming and outgoing email into a single account. As that account built up, the administrator would naturally want to archive it off to a file server where it could be saved.

The details of how these files were configured make it very unlikely an outsider hacked them.

So given the assumptions listed above, the hacker would have to have access to the gateway mail server and/or the Administration file server where the emails were archived. This machine would most likely be an Administrative file server. It would not be optimal for an Administrator to clutter up a production server open to the Internet with sensitive archives.

This means it is very unlikely that the server which had the e-mail archive was connected to the internet.

The ./FOIA/documents directory is a complete mess. There are documents from Professor Hulme, Professor Briffa, the now famous HARRY_READ_ME.txt, and many others. There seems to be no order at all.

One file in particular, ./FOIA/documents/mkhadcrut is only three lines long and contains:

tail +13021 hadcrut-1851-1996.dat | head -n 359352 | ./twistglob > hadcrut.dat
# nb. 1994- data is already dateline-aligned
cat hadcrut-1994-2001.dat >> hadcrut.dat

Pretty simple stuff, get everything in hadcrut-1851-1996.dat starting at the 13021st line. From that get only the first 359352 lines and run that through a program called twistglob in this directory and dump the results into hadcrut.dat. Then dump all of the information in hadcrut-1994-2001.dat into the bottom of hadcrut.dat.

….Except there isn’t a program called twistglob in the ./FOIA/documents/ directory. Nor is there the resultant hadcrut.dat or the source files hadcrut-1851-1996.dat and hadcrut-1994-2001.dat.

This tells me that the collection of files and directories in ./documents isn’t so much a shared directory on a server, but a dump directory for someone who collected all of these files. The originals would be from shared folders, home directories, desktop machines, workstations, profiles and the like.

Remember the reason that the Freedom of Information requests were denied? In email 1106338806.txt, Jan 21, 2005 Professor Phil Jones states that he will be using IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) to shelter the data from Freedom of Information requests. In email 1219239172.txt, on August 20th 2008, Prof. Jones says “The FOI line we’re all using is this. IPCC is exempt from any countries FOI – the skeptics have been told this. Even though we (MOHC, CRU/UEA) possibly hold relevant info the IPCC is not part our remit (mission statement, aims etc) therefore we don’t have an obligation to pass it on.”

Is that why the data files, the result files and the ‘twistglob’ program aren’t in the ./documents directory? I think this is a likely possibility.

This file existed because someone was planning to honor the FOIA request. Then, it was denied.

The only reasonable explanation for the archive being in this state is that the FOI Officer at the University was practising due diligence. The UEA was collecting data that couldn’t be sheltered and they created FOIA2009.zip.

It is most likely that the FOI Officer at the University put it on an anonymous ftp server or that it resided on a shared folder that many people had access to and some curious individual looked at it.

If as some say, this was a targeted crack, then the cracker would have had to have back-doors and access to every machine at UEA and not just the CRU. It simply isn’t reasonable for the FOI Officer to have kept the collection on a CRU system where CRU people had access, but rather used a UEA system.

Occam’s razor concludes that “the simplest explanation or strategy tends to be the best one”. The simplest explanation in this case is that someone at UEA found it and released it to the wild and the release of FOIA2009.zip wasn’t because of some hacker, but because of a leak from UEA by a person with scruples.

Diogenes searched the world for an honest man. He seems to have found one (or an honest woman) at University of East Anglia.

Climategate: Be Skeptical of Envirojournalism

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

By Bradley J. Fikes

Someone who is paid to find evidence of environmental catastrophes would probably find them more often than someone whose pay doesn’t depend on finding them. That’s something to keep in mind when you read environmental reporting on Climategate.

Any large news organization, such as the Associated Press, has reporters assigned to cover environmental issues. The agenda in environmental reporting is that humans are damaging the planet, and the role of the reporter is to wake people up to the damage. Otherwise, the beat would not be justified. For example, here’s how the New York Times explains its Dot Earth blog:

“By 2050 or so, the world population is expected to reach nine billion, essentially adding two Chinas to the number of people alive today. Those billions will be seeking food, water and other resources on a planet where, scientists say, humans are already shaping climate and the web of life.”

It’s not hard to see what the point is — humans are a plague on the planet, and overpopulation is the problem. This is the discredited enviro-Malthusian view that prompted discredited doomsayer Paul Ehrlich to make his famous bet with Julian Simon that the price of five metals — selected by Ehrlich — would rise as demand increased. Ehrlich lost.

A field based on the premise that humans are ruining the planet is naturally going to attract reporters who think that way. They talk to like-minded scientists, they talk to each other, they talk to Greenpeace, with a token skeptic or two thrown in to give the pretension of balance.

So the output of these environmental reporters is generally swayed toward the most alarmist views. Global warming is the poster child.

Climategate is an unwelcome gate-crasher at the doomfest. Top climate scientists are caught red-handed discussing how to hide information that would call man-caused global warming, AGW, into question. They discuss how to squeeze skeptics out of peer-reviewed journals, and even blackball journals that discuss skeptical work.

Yes, global warming is man-made

Friday, November 27th, 2009

UPDATE # 3: The IPCC chair says there is no problem. “Peer review” will save us. Full speed ahead to Copenhagen.

No surprise there.

UPDATE # 2: More chicanery. The raw data was dumped years ago and there is no way to check their work. This is not science.

UPDATE: Little Green Footballs blogger Charles Johnson, who became famous over the Bush TANG story (He was the first to demonstrate the fact that the alleged 1972 memo was written on a computer with Times New Roman font), has gone off the deep end on the climate data manipulation story and is attacking all the stories about data manipulation and falsification as “lies.” Charles is an expert by virtue of the fact that he is a musician. He seems to have gotten obsessed with creationism and this has led to his downfall on these other issues.

From his link, a comment explains it all:

Thanks, Gareth – NZC”S”C revealed yet again to be idealogues and propagandists with little knowledge of either climate or science; mere shills for the fossil fuel industry who fund them through the Heartland Institute.

And we know who funds the alarmists.

There is another comment that makes a much more sensible point:

Sorry CJ, this time your avoiding some troubling facts. If you haven’t go look at the code (I know your skilled in this area and you will see how bad this PhD quality code is to real SW that can endanger people). For those of us who stood by you on Rathergate, while your credibility was attacked by folks who don’t know why you made sense, you should realize there are some of us just as insightful and trained to detect bad assumptions, questionable massaging, unfounded theories on global climate.

The fact is the raw data across the globe (even the CRU raw temps) don’t show runaway global warming. It’s not just the emails (which you have been cherry picking, avoiding the hard ones where people tell others to illegally destroy data). It’s the code with hard coded overwrites. It is the deletion of data that tells a contradictory story, of cutting off the picture when it looks bad.

Honestly, I thought much higher of you than this.

BTW, to disagree with global warming does not make you a Palinista or Right winger. They can be right for the wrong reasons. Just like loving you family doesn’t make you an evil right winger – something else they have in common with all of us.

Whatever your issues forget them and look at the code and the data objectively. And realize Jones, Mann et al were persecuting people with differing theories and opinions. They were the ones acting like right wing purists – not us independents who just happen to be able to detect hundreds of problems with the current theories and the methods they use to hide the full picture.

Look at the entire picture, no matter how uncomfortable

This is an example of the fact that, unlike most left wing blogs, Johnson is still posting critical comments. We’ll see how he responds.

Unfortunately, he responds like a left wing blog:

re: #35 AJStrata

And I thought much more highly of you too, before learning that you’re a hardcore climate change denier who’s not above distorting and misrepresenting facts.

Oh well. He was right about the Bush story. I don’t know where this stuff came from.

It is now becoming clear that global warming is man-made. The cause is not CO2 but something simpler and more easy to explain. It was caused by the manipulation of data for the purpose of creating a fraud. When bankers and stock brokers do it, they go to jail.

Kiwigraph1

This is what the official New Zealand National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research has posted as the unmistakable trend of temperature since 1853 in New Zealand.

Kiwigraph2

This is a graphic created from unaltered raw data, which is fortunately still available from their files. The raw data at the East Anglia CRU has been destroyed, making such a comparison impossible.

Straight away you can see there’s no slope—either up or down. The temperatures are remarkably constant way back to the 1850s. Of course, the temperature still varies from year to year, but the trend stays level—statistically insignificant at 0.06°C per century since 1850.
Putting these two graphs side by side, you can see huge differences. What is going on?
Why does NIWA’s graph show strong warming, but graphing their own raw data looks completely different? Their graph shows warming, but the actual temperature readings show none whatsoever!
Have the readings in the official NIWA graph been adjusted?
It is relatively easy to find out. We compared raw data for each station (from NIWA’s web site) with the adjusted official data, which we obtained from one of Dr Salinger’s colleagues.
Requests for this information from Dr Salinger himself over the years, by different scientists, have long gone unanswered, but now we might discover the truth.

At least the data was not destroyed as it has been at East Anglia.

What did we find? First, the station histories are unremarkable. There are no reasons for any large corrections. But we were astonished to find that strong adjustments have indeed been made.

About half the adjustments actually created a warming trend where none existed; the other half greatly exaggerated existing warming. All the adjustments increased or even created a warming trend, with only one (Dunedin) going the other way and slightly reducing the original trend.
The shocking truth is that the oldest readings have been cranked way down and later readings artificially lifted to give a false impression of warming, as documented below. There is nothing in the station histories to warrant these adjustments and to date Dr Salinger and NIWA have not revealed why they did this.

These people who committed this fraud (I agree that hoax is not the proper term as it is too benign) should be prosecuted. They were paid government funds to do research and they falsified it. Why ? That is still to be determined but there are several possibilities. They could have convinced themselves that the natural slight warming trend after the end of the Little Ice Age was more serious. They could be ideologically opposed to modern life and especially capitalism. Maybe they just thought that more funds for research would be forthcoming if a crisis was created.

Scientific Tribes, Deception And Global Warming

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Bradley J. Fikes

I don’t think the now-infamous hacked climate science emails from the University of East Anglia’s Climate Research Unit show that the theory of man-caused global warming (AGW) is a fraud. What it does show is the pernicious effects of groupthink and an advanced level of intellectual corruption among some of the world’s top AGW scientists.

Scientists advancing AGW banded together, and deliberately shut out skeptics from the scientific community as much as possible. They adjusted their findings to help political campaigns on AGW, discussed how to keep information out of the hands of skeptics, cautioned about keeping  “dirty laundry” confidential lest it feed the case of skeptics, and discussed rigging the peer review process to keep out skeptical papers.

The all-too-cozy relationship between environmental campaigners and ostensibly fact-driven scientists is nakedly laid out in an email from Adam Markham asking that a report be “beefed up” to help a public campaign by the Australian World Wildlife Federation:

The election

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

UPDATE: There are some strange things going on in the final vote count. Maybe it’s not over. They sure got Owens sworn in fast. What happens if he lost the election ?

Well, Hoffman lost but not by much. Dede Scozzafava managed to sink him by endorsing the Democrat. So much for Newt Gingrich’s counsel. He had several factors against him. He apparently did not live in the district although it is huge. I suspect his business is in the district but that was not enough. He also did poorly on local issues in a newspaper interview. That could be a phony issue if the paper was supporting someone else but this was not a good moment.

Regarding the proposed rooftop highway across the top of the district linking Watertown to Plattsburgh, Mr. Hoffman said only that he was open to studying the idea that has been around for years and will require federal financial assistance to complete.

Mr. Hoffman had no opinion about winter navigation and widening the St. Lawrence Seaway with their potential environmental damage. He was not familiar with the repercussions of a proposed federal energy marketing agency for the Great Lakes, which could pay for Seaway expansion contrary to district interests.

A flustered and ill-at-ease Mr. Hoffman objected to the heated questioning, saying he should have been provided a list of questions he might be asked. He was, if he had taken the time to read the Thursday morning Times editorial raising the very same questions.

That was lame. He is also not that impressive being interviewed on TV. I can see how the locals would resent the effort to make the campaign about national issues. Jobs and spending and deficits are universal but he seems to have done a poor job with the local paper.

Coming to Mr. Hoffman’s defense, former House Majority Leader Dick Armey, R-Texas, who accompanied the candidate on a campaign swing, dismissed regional concerns as “parochial” issues that would not determine the outcome of the election.

Ouch ! Armey should know better than that.

Here is a post by a Hoffman supporter on the election. He makes some sweeping claims that may not bear out. A few commenters add to the discussion, then the usual trolls appear. You can spot the lefties by their use of the obscene derogatory “teabagger.” Once you see that word, you know they do not mean well and anything they say is spin.

The Virginia election was a real triumph for the GOP with the whole top slate plus many down ballot races being won.

I think it is worthwhile to note that McDonnell campaigned on the issues of spending, taxes and regulation while his opponents, including the Washington Post, got hysterical about his social views. I think that is the right approach and I think the less said by candidates about social issues next year, the better.

New Jersey turned out better than many expected. Christie was criticized before the election for refusing to rule out tax increases and by resisting the property tax issue in debates. Since he won, I guess he was right.

In California, I had some hopes for the special election in the Bay Area where Garamendi was running for CA 10 against David Harmer and won in a low turnout election. That has been a safe seat for the Democrats for years but hope springs eternal.

Turnout was estimated to be about 39 percent – “an exceptionally high figure” for a special congressional election in California, said Steve Weir, clerk-recorder for Contra Costa County, where nearly 70 percent of the district’s voters live. The district includes parts of Alameda, Solano and Sacramento counties.

The vote totals, as pointed out by a commenter at Patterico, suggest that Republicans turned out well but there just aren’t enough of them in that district.

In Tucson, the tea party movement had some success in ousting one of the left wing city council members. One has been counted as lost and the other is close. That would be a significant achievement.

Tea parties and a testy national mood aside, Ward 3 incumbent Karin Uhlich is holding on to a narrow lead over Ben Buehler-Garcia.
Nina Trasoff was trailing Republican Steve Kozachik, leaving both races too close to call, with thousands of early ballots still to be counted.

Well, 2010 is coming.
