I was a very girly 13 yr. old girl back in 1964, but for some reason I wanted a chemistry set for Xmas. Santa provided a tri-fold metal case filled with chemicals, a microscope and instructions to do cool things. My sibs and I had a good time with it and amazed our friends and neighbors. Can hardly see this happening nowadays what with the liabilitiy of putting such things in the hand of kids. My brother had an erector set(as well as Lincoln Logs) that we noodled around with, though I can't recall making anything substantive with it. I finally used pieces of it for a college art project. Thanks for your post on these topics.

Wonderful post.

I grew up spending hours building with tinker toys. Friends and I would stage demolition derbies with our creations, which not only taught one the value of robust design, but also how to craft rules of the game and get along in a competitive venture.

Now all gaming is done on the video screen. Will this serve us as well in the future?
